Portraits… Why paint them?

In a recent talk with a friend i exhibited with (from the 7th to the 28th of nov, 2008), we discussed, or rather elaborated on why we are so interested in portraying our fellow humans, and ourselves.

First and foremost i mirror myself in the world surrounding me and the individuals crossing my path. I am profoundly interested in what it is about these people that has such a great impact on me, what it is that inspires me, because everyone touches me somehow. The most direct way for me to reflect on this, is to paint or draw that someone. It is a way for me to communicate what that person means to me. Sometimes unknown facets or impressions of the person, surface through the portrait, other times i clarify feelings I didn’t know what meant. It is always a HUGE challenge for me to portray people and it is a great battle, especially because i am aware of how much i expose myself to the model.

Though… The exposure is probably more visible the other way around. The individual modelling for me, shows me great trust. It is almost never a completely pleasant feeling to see how other people view you. I put a great honor in respecting this trust, and making the individual modelling for me comfortable.
